As a 14-year-old working as a Saturday Salon Assistant in her mum’s friend’s salon, Marguerita Murray knew that she wanted to be a hairdresser.

After completing her apprenticeship, Marguerita worked as a stylist for several years, before reluctantly coming off the floor due to an injury. Now working as the salon manager and apprentice trainer at Rodney Wayne St Lukes, Marguerita is using her years of experience and knowledge to grow the next generation of stylists.

“Qualified stylists are getting harder and harder to come by,” says Marguerita. “Once you have that certificate, it gives you more opportunities and the confidence knowing you have skills that are up to industry standards.”

First year hairdressing apprentice Anna Martirez has had a passion for hair since she was young. After beginning her hairdressing journey through an academy, Anna found she was learning so much more during her part-time working hours in the salon.

Since starting her apprenticeship at Rodney Wayne St Lukes, Anna has grown her skills as a technician and realised her potential, all while working towards becoming a 100% Qualified stylist.

“I love that there is always something new for me to learn,” says Anna. “Techniques and trending styles constantly change which makes it always exciting!”

For Marguerita, playing a big part in an apprentice’s journey to becoming a qualified stylist brings a sense of satisfaction. “I really enjoy watching them gain the skills they need, after starting out knowing not much at all,” she says.

Marguerita’s biggest tip for other apprentice trainers is to be organised. “Have a clear plan for your apprentices – set goals and expectations with timeframes,” explains Marguerita. “Make sure they know what the expectations are and check in to make sure they are feeling supported along the way.”

To other apprentices, Anna urges them to not be afraid to ask for help. “As an apprentice, there is no such thing as a dumb question,” she says. “Learn from your fellow stylists, technicians, and trainers. Observing others in the salon is also a great way to learn!”
