Q&A, Melanie Leach Central Apprentice of the Year

“Just say yes, say yes to everything! Learning and training in new skills is the best way to continue to grow.”

Can you tell us about yourself?

Can you tell us about yourself?

Can you tell us about yourself?

Hi I’m Melanie, third year apprentice from Meche Hair and Academy. I’m 19 years old. I’m originally from Masterton but made the move to Napier to further and better my education.

Why did you choose to become an apprentice?
I always loved doing hair and being creative. I did a school gateway course, and it was amazing. I may have only been sweeping and cleaning, but it truly opened my eyes to see the magic that happens in the chair with trainers, clients and stylists.

What attracted you to this industry?
The thought of constantly making clients feel loved and amazing while still being able to let my creativity shine, I found this industry is the perfect balance, I love every client I do as one is never the same as the other, but I get to make people feel amazing.

What’s your favourite skill you’ve mastered during your apprenticeship?
My favourite skill is definitely consultation.

It was always where I lacked, but this year I knuckled down and went back to basics, and now I feel so much more confident to perform the majority of services as I always have my consultation skills behind me.

What advice would you give to someone starting a HITO apprenticeship?
Show up every day with a smile on your face, push through the grit the tears and struggles as what happens in our apprenticeship good or bad doesn’t define us. What does is how we overcome those challenges. And just say yes, say yes to everything! Learning and training in new skills is the best way to continue to grow, with your team backing you as well!

What was a memorable moment in your apprenticeship?
Winning HITO Central Apprentice of the Year definitely!

I have had what some would call a pretty tough 3 years, but I didn’t let that define me, I kept pushing and persevered. And to win this has been my biggest accomplishment and proves hard work and pushing through and keeping going pays off (aka just keep swimming).

Who has been your biggest inspiration throughout your apprenticeship journey?
My biggest inspiration has always been the people around me. I look up to every one of my colleagues and appreciate their journeys and struggles. Because they are the living proof that you have to work hard to achieve your goals.

Another one of my inspirations is Danny Pato, as he has become an International Artist from small little NZ. He inspires me and reminds me that our little country can make it in the big leagues!

What are your career goals and aspirations?
My goals are to continue training and learning. I have a big passion for competitions and training others. I’d love to become a mentor for younger apprentices and be able to give them the support they deserve.

What does being awarded Apprentice of the Year mean to you?
It means everything to me. The overwhelming feeling of happiness, gratitude and excitement is huge.

I am so beyond grateful, and I hope this is my first step into becoming a mentor for younger apprentices, and I hope this shows other apprentices you can do it as well!
