Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey into the industry?

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey into the industry?

I’m Mia, and I’m currently completing my apprenticeship while working at Meche Hair and Academy! Hairdressing has honestly always been something I’ve wanted to do, I can’t really remember a time I wanted anything different. I’ve always loved being creative and making people feel confident in themselves, so the industry felt like the perfect fit for me. Since starting my apprenticeship, I’ve grown so much both personally and professionally, and I’m so grateful to be surrounded by such supportive trainers and teammates.

Why did you choose to do a HITO apprenticeship?
I chose to do a HITO apprenticeship because I loved the idea of learning hands on while working in a real salon environment. For me, being able to learn directly from experienced stylists every day has been the best way to build confidence and improve my skills. It’s also given me the opportunity to work with real clients while continuing to grow my knowledge through training and education. The support from HITO, my trainers, and my salon has made such a difference throughout my apprenticeship journey.

What is your favourite thing about hairdressing?
My favourite thing about hairdressing is definitely the creative side of it. I love that every client is different and that you can completely transform not only someone’s hair, but also how they feel about themselves. I also really love the connections you build with clients and the salon environment itself! I also really enjoy competitions and pushing myself creatively. Being able to challenge myself, learn new things, and meet so many inspiring people through the industry has been one of the best parts of my journey so far!

Can you tell us a bit about your entry into the CURATE Awards – why did you decide to enter and how did it feel to win?
Entering the curate awards was honestly such an exciting opportunity for me. I wanted to completely step outside my comfort zone and gain experience being involved in something so inspiring within the industry. Winning was honestly insane! I felt so grateful and proud. There are so many incredibly talented people involved, so it was really special to be recognised alongside them. it’s also opened the door to some incredible opportunities. I’ve had the chance to head to Sydney for mentoring and a photoshoot, as well as attend some amazing industry shows and events. I’m especially thankful to my Meche team, my family, my model, and everyone who supported me throughout the whole process.

What advice do you have for current and future HITO apprentices?
My biggest advice would be to take every opportunity and never be afraid to ask questions. You learn so much by putting yourself out there, whether that’s attending education, entering competitions, or simply asking for help in the salon. Trust the process, be patient with yourself, and remember that confidence comes with time and practice. Surround yourself with people who inspire and support you! ❤️
