Q&A with Louis Fenton, Jovani's Babershop

Louis is currently completing his apprenticeship and on the journey to becoming a 100% qualified barber. We caught up with him to chat about his experience in an apprenticeship and owning his own business.

What made you want to pursue barbering?

I wanted to pursue a career in barbering because my brother worked as a barber and I thought it was a cool job. In 2018, we bought Jovani’s, and then in 2022, I started working here as a barber.

What made you want to own a barbershop?

I wanted to own a barbershop because I thought it’d be cool to work with my brother. It was the next step in doing something that we enjoyed together and we just thought it’d be a cool environment and learning experience.

Why do you want to be a qualified Barber?

I want to be a qualified Barber because I think it shows that you take the industry seriously, you want to learn and upskill, and it reflects well with clients.

What are your favourite styles and cuts at the moment?

Favourite styles to do are probably skin fades, just anything but a blowout taper.

What are some things you would love to do in this industry in the future?

I want to continue to learn as a barber, keep on learning new skills, hopefully get into hair dyeing one day and better understand how to do long hair.

How do you find learning in an apprenticeship?

I find learning in an apprenticeship really helpful because it allows me to continue to learn while I’m working and continue to become a better barber.

What is your favourite part of training?

My favourite part of training is just learning new skills and getting a better understanding on why you use certain techniques.

How do you stay motivated in your apprenticeship?

I stay motivated in my apprenticeship because I want to continue to be a better barber and learn new skills.

What is your advice for people interested in becoming a barbering apprentice?

I think it’s a great idea to become a barbering apprentice because it allows you to upskill, learn new things, and just become a better barber all round.
